| Introduction |
| Kizuna is set to be performed on On May, 2, 2008 (Fri) at Osaka University. Kizuna’s main themes are ‘International Exchange’ and ‘The Aging/Graying society,’ two important social developments which will come change the lives of those in many different societies across the globe in the near future. |
| Kizuna’s key players and staff are comprised of those who participated in the 2006 Japanese-Chinese Collaborative Musical Project. It is the common goal of all members, staff, and cast to raise awareness of issues that are relevant to many, regardless of nationality. With Kizuna, we hope to use international communication and interaction across borders through our stage production to bring attention to the issue of elder care in the 21st century. |

| Purpose |
| Through Kizuna we hope to achieve 3 main goals: |
| Objective #1:Increased student communication and friendship |
| This goal arose to our consciousness through the cast and staff’s previous experience in the Japanese-Chinese Musical Project. From the creation of this event, we learned that, “collaborative efforts build strong bonds.” With the goal of increasing international partnership based in Japan, we believe that students from Osaka University with our partners from outside of Japan can transcend national borders and form sustainable and lasting friendships. It is the sincere hope of the cast and staff to promote, maintain, the synergy born from cooperation and friendship. |
| Objective #2:To spread awareness and consciousness of the present rise of aging populations and the question of how the elderly will be cared for by the young. |
| At present the rise of ‘aging societies’ ‘graying societies’ or ‘graying populations’ is a global phenomenon based mainly in developed countries. However, it is our purpose to produce a program that draws attention to the role, character, and lifestyle of the elderly on the entire planet in the near future. As Kizuna has the question of, “What is Humanitarian elder care?” as its’ primary theme, our target audience is those members of society who will be affected most by changes in how the elderly will be cared for in the future, and can provide valuable feedback to this question. |

It is our sincere hope that those who are already involved with the elderly, and the elderly themselves will watch Kizuna and provide valuable feedback as to their feeling towards what humanitarian elder care means to them. |
| Objective #3:To find connections between robots and humans |
| In relationship to the goal of brining awareness to the reality that elder care will become one of the most important issues of the 21st century, we hope to look into what the future may bring to the elderly. So, we hope to have a real life caretaker-robot perform on stage. Through the robot’s performance, we hope to raise question the reality, fragility, and strength of our human to each other, and that which we will have with robots. Our robot is being made especially for Kizuna by robotics researchers and developers and researchers at Osaka University. |

| The Basics:Kizuna will be performed at the Osaka University Convention Center. Actors and student actors from around the world are scheduled to participate. In addition to local seniors, we hope to include to the greatest extent caretakers and health workers and those who are involved in elder care and elder care facilities. In addition, some actors were invited from Shanghai, China. |
| Additional Background:Kizuna was born through collaboration between the author and students from Shanghai and is the product of meaningful interaction between Japanese and Chinese students. Most of the members currently live with their Grandparents and close family, or at one time or another have experienced a lifestyle based around the extended nuclear family. The participants familiarity with the elderly enhances their awareness of the challenge posed by the graying of both Japanese and Chinese populations in the 21st century. By harnessing this personal knowledge shared by the cast and crew of Kizuna we hope to present the question of “what is a ‘human connection’ or bond, and how does it relate to the elderly” on stage. |
